Maintaining Your Tool Storage

By VisiRay Home · May 15, 2025 · 3 min read

Tool storage takes a beating. Here's how to keep it working smoothly for years.

Steel chests and cabinets

Wipe down with a dry cloth to remove dust and moisture. If you see any rust spots, sand them lightly and touch up with matching paint. Lubricate drawer slides every six months with a dry lubricant.

Pegboards

Check that mounting hardware is tight every few months. Steel pegboards can be wiped with a damp cloth. If hooks lose tension, bend them slightly to restore grip.

Plastic organizers

Avoid solvent-based cleaners that can craze the plastic. Warm soapy water works fine. Check latches and hinges for cracks before they fail.

Wood workbenches

Keep wood sealed with a food-grade mineral oil or paste wax. Avoid standing water. If the surface gets dented, a light sanding and re-oiling restores it.

A few minutes of maintenance saves hours of frustration later.
